Academy of Art University Supports Unique Global Designers

The renowned Academy of Art University (AAU) is 88 years old and calls San Francisco, California home. The University is a learning center for fashion that encompasses the world in culture and technology. Painter and magazine editor Richard S. Stephens founded AAU. The Academy of Art University has received numerous awards and recognition through its faculty staff, students, and its notable alumni.


For 21 annual runway events, The School of Fashion at the AAU has launched innovative designers into the world spotlight. At its September 2017 runway showcase in New York, symbolizing New York Fashion Week, ten Bachelor of Fine Arts and Masters of Fine Arts graduates debuted a unique collection of womenswear and menswear.

Eden Slezin, MFA designer from the Bay Area featured vintage denim. She used organic denim and recycled rubber bike tubes.


Dina Marie Lam, MFA designer from Los Angeles, CA. She featured soft, warm, and comfortable designs in the marriage of white and beige.


Carlos Rodriguez, BFA designer from Mexico City, Mexico and Clarksburg, California. He featured embroidery techniques created by hand and machine designs.


Rheanna Oliver-Palanca, MFA designer from Kennebunk, Maine created soft knitwear with a wool blend to feature warmth and comfort.


Saya Shen, MFA designer from Beijing, China created billowy silhouettes with her owndigital landscape photographs transferred into her fabrics.


Joanna Jadallah, MFA designer from Chicago, Illinois and Orange County, California. She featured menswear made of lightweight wool, lambskin leather, cashmere knits and brocades, and suiting fabrics.


Cana Klebanoff, BFA designer from Queens, NY and Monmouth County, New Jersey. She featured knitwear inspired by Japanese architecture and samurai armor.


Ryan Yu, MFA designer born in Shenyang, Liaoning, China. Yu featured dark and light in the union of black and white garments that were uniquely constructed. His fabrics included patent leather, jersey, and wool.


Jelly Shan, MFA designer of Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China. She called her collection as girly, edgy, and fresh and her inspiration was the religious environment of northwestern China.

Josh Smith Donates a Greenhouse to High Desert Montessori School

High Desert Montessori School has achieved a lot of success since it was started in 1992. On May 30, 2017, the school witnessed yet another historic event. For the first time, the school became the first institution in Washoe County to have a greenhouse. The greenhouse was donated Reno-based entrepreneur Josh Smith’s company Modular Greenhouses.
The new greenhouse will enable students to learn how to grow a variety of food crops. They will also learn how to apply agricultural knowledge and skills to improve their own health and general well-being. In a one-hour presentation, Josh Smith, the chief executive officer of Modular Greenhouses, said that his company is looking forward to training students to be leaders in campaigning for healthy eating and living in Reno, Nevada. He revealed the company’s program to donate greenhouses to every school and nonprofit organization in the county. He showed optimism that one day the food crops grown by the students will serve tens of restaurants and homes in Reno.
